Day four - Capanne Di Cosola to Due Ponti

This is down as a majestic day 14km of high walking culminating in the meadows which surround Monte Cavalla and views for ever. So 20km with 550m of ascent.

We awoke to rain, not as heavy as the day before but enough to get very wet.We are high level walking collecting various tops on the way.
Monte Cavalmurone at 1670m, Monte Legna 1669m, ignoring the ridge joining from the west, continuing on to Monte Carmo  1640m.
In the breaking cloud the views look to be amazing.

We came across these magnificent plants, we thought a type of lily.

Common Asphodelus

It has the looks of a Pineapple lily with the way its lower flowers stick out.

We continued to Monte Carmo then from the top it was a downhill walk to the road and a closed Albergo at Capanne di Carrega. There were glimpses down into the valley of Varni. There was another uphill road ascent pass the Observatory and a slow left hand bend we left the road and headed across a meadow totally different to the high meadows we had seen the day before with little in the way of flowers.

We now had undulating ridge walking, visibility wasn't that good but we could hear the chimes of church clocks in the valley bottom, the villages of Fascia and Fontanarosso, we didn't take the path to the peak of Monte Cavalla, though the views were amazing today it wasn't going to be worth the effort.
We were dropping in height now, finding a picnic site  we stopped off and had some water and snack. We were still going down hill within mixed woodland on a track that came to a T junction, the cairn that had been removed was slowly being rebuilt, Allan added his stone. It was now a right hand turn following a easy to see dry stone wall. The path is an example of the network of paved roads that linked the villages before WW2 when it was a pastoral economy, the recent growth of tree cover is all post war.
As we were dropping down the visibility was improving the cloud was breaking

We had reached the SP16, we left to go up hill on a paved track that was the original Fascia to Due Ponti old road. We kept the look out for a radio mast in a field but never saw it, joined the road only to leave it again but only to re join just outside Cassingheno. There was a cemetery and clock tower, the type of burial in this area was above ground not sure if coffins or ashes were stored as the doors in the walls were quite large.
The path then follows the road out of the village and there was a small right hand sign and a faint path down hill after an easy descent the path zigzags down steeply and we tumble out on the main road again. Here we made a serious direction error and went straight over the road and down a broad path  down hill again. this petered out after 200 yards and we then started heading down on a short cut to the stream. This way became precipitous  in the evening sun we should have been enjoying a beer instead we were bush wacking our way through under growth. Eventually we decided we would head back up to the road, it was a struggle but once there 50 yards further on were the clear directions in the walking guide, we were both tired and strolled down on the road knowing we had a 30 minute plus walk in to Due Ponti. allan tempted me off again when we could see a clear path missing off one of the man zig zags the road made.
We were at our hotel at  gone 7.30pm desperately in need of a beer and shower in that order.
