Day five - Due Ponti to Calcinara

Today is 6 hours walking  for 19km and only 490m of ascent, the weather is promising so we were looking forward to a splendid day.

The walk's planned start is just outside the village of Buffalora, we had a lift there, all planned by the host from the Hotel Due Ponti. From the road tunnel where we were dropped off there was a steady steep climb  of 100m of ascent on an asphalt lane through some habitation. Then continued along a track sign posted M. Lavagnola. We were walking in light woodland in a SW direction, the path steepened to a col, from here the M Lavagnola was a short brief sprint uphill. The summit is 1118m and the views were amazing.

We could see the sea, sat back drinking all the beauty in, had a snack, there is a memorial to locals who were killed in the first world war.

This was the first time in the whole holiday we had had such views, they were there before but hidden under cloud, if we had them previous our days would have been much longer as it was breath taking.
We dropped down from the peak and checked out the information boards.
We were on a long distance foot path that traveled east to west, but at present the 430km will be too much for a week to complete!!

We headed off in a SW direction we are over 1000m but the walk is down hill we are just off the ridge which was on our left, with views down into the deep valleys.

We gained the ridge top again and the views were amazing, at the Colla dei Rossi 845m there is a sign post to Rossi, where Frank Sinatra's mother was born in 1896.
We continued to descend passing deserted buildings, and abandoned terracing after 30 minutes we were in a small settlement of Borgonovo, we then walk above the road following the ridge to Sant'Alberto where the Ristorante da Rico looked closed.
From here there is a narrow path that comes out to an open meadow on the Colle del Bado wonderful views again and more of those lily like flowers that we had seen previously.

We finish up high above the village of Pannesi, it is a steep downhill on an old mule track with the remains of a dry stone wall to walk beside. Dropping into the village past various house with numbers on their gates or walls the village lane comes out at a bus stop on the main road. Then we had a bit of a grudge walk on the road, there was the hint of rain in the air.
Our accommodation for the night was Alberro Caprile, this we managed to walk by, and we were halted by cries form villagers directing us back to where Fausto was waiting with an an appetizer  and a welcome beer.
We enjoyed the buzz in the bar, Rita arrived in from work and come through and chatted with us, her English is excellent.
The meal that evening again was very good, such very friendly staff.
